Tribute to Andre
Andre was my little brother. We called him Son short for Sonny Boy. Mom nicknamed him that because she was so happy to finally have a Boy after having two girls. I have so many wonderful memories from childhood growing up with him. ..I remember when we moved to the house on 228th Street my parents bought us a dog named Fritz. Andre taught him how to hold a Tootsie Roll POP between his paws and eat it. The dog started thinking he was a kid too and used to run up to the corner store and snatch the pops from a low shelf. Hed come home from school and find him inside the gate licking a candy pop like a child. He had to pay the angry store owner for the dogs candy bill. After Andre grew up, he joined the military and served honorably. He looked handsome in his army uniform. He came out and used his GI benefits to go to school in North Carolina and earned a college degree. Next he met a married Carol, the love of his life, in a beautiful wedding ceremony at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. His smile was as bright as the sun that day. He used his veterans benefits to buy a home in Queens wanting a better life for them. I remember how happy he was when Little Andre was born and how he accepted the other boys like his own. He worked sometimes two shifts at the post office to provide for his family.
The last time I saw him, he boasted about what his sons were doing now that they are all grown up like an extremely proud father. He expressed tearfully how much he loved Carol and talked about all he wanted to do for her and give to her. Said nothing about himself, only talked about his wife and sons. He loved them very much! Id like for them to hold that thought in their hearts, just as I will always hold him in my heart.
