My Big Brother

My uncle Joseph was very special to me. All my life, whether he was present or absent, he was always looking out for me. I had the privilege of growing up with my late grandparents, Icy and Clovis. Joseph was their youngest child and so, would become like a big brother for me. He built something that he called a handcart, that he would use to help his Mom take ground produce from the farm to the storage area where they were kept before they were packed in boxes to send to the market, or sold to those who should come to buy. On the days when he was not transporting goods by his handcart, he would take me for rides up and down the long driveway from our house, oh how I love those days. They were filled with joy and laughter and now happy memories. As the years passed, and uncle Joseph got married and lived in Mandeville, Manchester with his wife Maureen, I would leave my college campus to go to their home to get some Sunday dinner quite often. As a student at the time , it meant a lot to me to have somewhere to go and eat sometimes. After he migrated to the United States, I wasn't able to speak with him often until I was old enough to visit the United States then I was able to visit him by myself. He was always happy to see his niece and I was always happy to see him. As time went by and I started my own family, I didn't get to see him much but, we would talk by the phone about old times and the days of childhood. Last year when I got the message about his sudden illness I was very concerned at the seriousness but after a while I was hopeful that he would have recovered. My hope was vanquished, on April 23, when I got the call that he had passed away. I will miss his calm, ever present memory in my life, but I am hopeful that if somewhere in his conciousness he was able to call on the Lord and ask, "Lord Save Me" then I know I will meet him again in the earth made new. Rest In Peace my dear uncle, my Big Brother.
