Obituary for Victoria Gloria Ogbuagu

Victoria Gloria Ogbuagu was born on September 12, 1952 in Freetown, Sierra Leone to the late George Jonathan Ina and Rosaline Iya Bangura Johnson. Victoria was the second born of four children. Her younger twin brothers, Dr Raymond Johnson and Dr Reynold Johnson; her older brother, Samuel Johnson preceded her in death.
Victoria spent her early years in Regent, Sierra Leone where she attended the Regent Rural Primary School and the Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School. She proceeded to the Port Loko Women’s Teacher College where she obtained a Teacher’s Certificate. She taught at the Tower Hill Municipal Primary School and the Fergusson Street Primary School. She then furthered her education by attending the most renowned University in West Africa at the time called Fourah Bay College. At this institution, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Victoria later completed her education in Nigeria with a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Lagos.

While schooling in Sierra Leone, Victoria met and was courted by the late Fidelis Leweanya Ogbuagu. They fell in love and got married on April 28th, 1973. Their union produced five beautiful children: Chidi, Clifford, Victor, Royston and Linda. The family settled in Lagos, Nigeria where Victoria and her husband raised these beautiful children.

A strong advocate for education, Victoria further pursued a career teaching English and literature for many years at Federal Government College Lagos, Ijanikin. At this school, she touched the lives of so many students, colleagues and staff members. All 5 of Victoria’s children attended this Secondary School. After living and teaching in Nigeria for 19 years, Victoria relocated with her family to New Rochelle, New York and later the Bronx, New York. As a foreigner in the United States, this transition was not an easy one for Victoria but she persevered to find a home in the United States educational system to continue touching the lives of students with her gift of teaching. She started off as a substitute teacher at a couple of New York City Middle Schools and High Schools. She eventually found her new teaching home at Evander Childs High School, Bronx Academy of Health Careers. Victoria continued to teach English at this high school campus for 22 years. At this campus, Mrs. O, as she was fondly referred to by her students, staff members and colleagues, often incorporated African culture in her teaching to students, and always spoke passionately about the need to embrace all cultures.

Victoria loved teaching, writing, watching classic 70s sitcoms like Sanford & Son and The Jeffersons, helping others, and above all, she loved her family dearly. Victoria sacrificed so much for her children and husband. She was a very selfless person who put everyone before herself. She took so much pride and joy in caring for others. She was an Angel amongst us all. Victoria was called to her heavenly home after a brief illness.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory five children, Fidelis Chidi Ogbuagu, Clifford Chigemezu Ogbuagu, Victor Ikechukwu Ogbuagu, Royston Uzoma Ogbuagu and Linda Obiageli Dieng; five grandchildren, Amaechi Ogbuagu, Emmanuel Ogbuagu, Nnamdi Ogbuagu, Ethan Ogbuagu and Ikenna Ogbuagu; her twin brothers, Dr Raymond Johnson and Dr Reynold Johnson; two daughters-in-law, Lolade Ogbuagu and Shantel Ogbuagu; son-in-law, Ousmane Dieng; sister-in-law, Mary Johnson; two nieces, Clarice Johnson and Rosaline Johnson; five nephews, Brian Johnson, Reynold Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Reynold Johnson and Ronald Johnson.
