Obituary for Curtis L Holden Sr.

Curtis William Holden, Sr., of the Bronx, New York, transitioned from this life on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the age of 85. Curtis was born on January 25, 1937, to Lois and William Holden into a close-knit family community in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was educated in the North Carolina school system. Upon the death of his parents, he and his brothers went to live with his maternal grandmother, Christine Williams. She later relocated the family to Brooklyn, New York. He joined the United State Military and traveled the world as a member of the United States Army from 1961 - 1967. Curtis was always a “Working Man,” as he got his first job in his teens to help support his family. He was employed as a New York City Yellow Cab driver; Night Club Manager at The Baby Grand, Harlem, New York; CBS News/New York Times as a News Survey Pollster, and last worked as a Field Interviewer with Metro North/Metropolitan Transit Authority. While in the military, Curtis married the former Mary Daughtry, the woman who stole his heart, and they were married over 50 years. They enjoyed life together and created beautiful memories in New York City. They enjoyed taking trips visiting family in the South, going to drive in and movie theaters, and going to City Island for seafood outings in New York. Curtis was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed all genres of music from Gospel to R&B. He was always ready to sing with many artists who graced the stage at the Baby Grand in Harlem, New York, where he served as Nightclub Manager. As manager, he socialized with Jazz and R&B musical greats such as Ruth Brown, Billy Eckstine, Cuba Gooding, Sr., and other well-known notables of that time, who came by the club after their shows to relax, socialize, and have midnight jams. In his later years he used his God given gift of singing to glorify God as a member of the Union Baptist Church Men’s Choir in Stamford, Connecticut. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, reading, and watching old westerns on television. In May of 2019, while visiting church service with Curtis and daughter-in-law Crystal, he rededicated his life to God and became a member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford, Connecticut. With his health issues, he visited church when able, and when unable, he joined live streaming of the church service.
