Obituary for Bonnie Lee Jones

Bonnie Lee Jones, 71, of Bronx, NY peacefully departed this life and entered eternal rest on November 12, 2021. She was born June 10, 1950, to the late Lee M. Kirksey and Clara J. Coston in Alabama. Bonnie was the youngest of two children produced by this union and preceded in death by her sister Fannie R. Joyner.

At an early age her family relocated to Virginia, and Bonnie and her sister were raised in Norfolk, VA. In 1968 she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Upon graduation, Bonnie moved to Harlem, NY and joined her mother and stepfather, the late Johnnie Coston. For a short while, she worked as a New York Telephone Company operator and a medical receptionist at Harlem Hospital before returning to Norfolk. For over 20 years, Bonnie’s clerical skills landed her city, state and federal jobs working as a transportation management office assistant, a stenographer, a maritime administrative clerk, and a postal clerk. She ultimately retired from the US Postal Service in 1989. Bonnie spent her remaining years in Bronx, NY to live close to her mother.

Bonnie was a loving daughter, dedicated mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend to those who were lucky enough to know her. She was always described as kindhearted, easy going, comical and a bundle of joy, and a social butterfly. Bonnie often kept people in laughter because she could find humor in most life circumstances. She took pride in being the biggest cheerleader and supporter for her twin sons and daughter. But Bonnie lived to chat with her grandbabies and dote on them. Bonnie would often engage in conversations with almost anyone regardless of their educational level or age. She was knowledgeable in a range of topics such as religion, history, music, and politics. Bonnie enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, and she had a passionate affair with soft peppermint puff candy and chocolate.

Her memory will be cherished forever by her small but beautiful family: her daughter Clestine Chandler (DeLeon); twin sons Javon and Javed Jones; her grandchildren, Tatiana Gomes, twin girls Naziyah and Javiyah, Javed Jr, Terrell, Javon’taye, Azara, and Gabriella Jones, Keonna and Shianna Chandler; nephew Wille Joyner III along with host of relatives and friends.

A private affair will take place to honor her love, life, and legacy.

While this is the end of Bonnie’s physical life on earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her. “To be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord is far greater. However, her presence here with us will be missed.”
