The Obituary
Muriel Riley Hamilton was born in Bronx, New York on September 17, 1933 to the late Lillian and Easton Riley. Muriel was raised in Harlem, New York with her sisters, Sylvia James, Louise Riley and Bernice Evelyn. She received Christ in her life at an early age and continued to serve the Lord.
Muriel graduated from Long Island University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. From 1974 to 1989, she was a Nurse Administrator for the State of New York at Manhattan Psychiatric Center on Ward’s Island. During that time she received her license as a Registered Nurse and as a private school instructor.
After retirement, Muriel kept herself quite busy, becoming a Clinical and WIC program Nurse at the Mt. Vernon Neighborhood Health Center and teaching students seeking certification in nursing at the Medical Aid Training School, Inc. in Mt. Vernon, New York. She encouraged all of her students and those who came into her life to be their best and the importance and value of an education and working hard towards their goals no matter the circumstance. She believed that anything was possible with dedication and hard work.
In addition, she was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Adah Chapter #82 of Mt. Vernon, NY; Daughters of Isis, Elejmal Court #171 of White Plains, NY; Heroines of Jericho, Ladies Circle of Perfection and Key Women of America holding various titles and positions throughout her tenure. Those who knew Muriel personally, knew that she was a kind, giving and a loyal mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, who would give to anyone who needed her help without hesitation.
Muriel was also a dedicated member of Mt. Zion Christian Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, New York under the late Rev. Peter Wilson, Sr., where she served as a Deaconess for many years helping to build the new Mt. Zion Christian Baptist Church that now stands at 411 South 8th Avenue in Mt. Vernon while leading the nurses/health care ministry. She later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and was a dedicated member of Ebenezer Baptist Church under Pastor, Dr. Leonzo D. Lynch where she served as a Deaconess and member of the health care ministry. After a few years living in Charlotte, she returned to New York where she lived until her passing.
She was married to Calvin Hamilton Sr. who preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory six beautiful children; Sandra Walker, Monica Bynum, Charles Hamilton, Calvin Hamilton Jr., Anthony Hamilton and Victoria Hamilton; seven grandchildren; Nicole, Charlisa, Calvin III, Ronald Jr., Danielle, Christopher and Diego; two daugthers-in-law, Tammi and Santa; one sister, Bernice, one nephew, Leo and many more relatives and friends.
