Monica Theresa Thompson passed away unexpectedly in Manhattan on 09/21/2020. She was 83 years old. Monica Theresa Thompson was born Monica Theresa Ramnanon on 03/29/1937 to Clara Bacchus Ramnanon and Donald Ramnanon in St. Mary Parish, Jamaica. She lived in Kingston, Jamaica, where she met and married Oswald Thompson. They had two daughters, Rosemarie Andrea Denise and Daniah Alicia Denise. She owned a small fabric supply business in Kingston, and bought her first home in Harbor View before she married. In 1978, she left Jamaica for the Bronx with her two daughters. Her husband followed a few years later. Despite the challenges of living in a new land, Monica never lost her gentle nature, warm smile, or kind heart. She fed her family, paid the rent, and still found time to take her daughters to the zoo, Botanical Gardens, Broadway, and every museum. She bought every book for school and attended every parent-teacher conference. She supported her daughters through college and graduate school. In retirement, she traveled abroad with Rosemarie and visited Daniah and her grandchildren in Minnesota, which brought her great joy. Monica was known for her love of sports, especially tennis. She read voraciously and knew every current event. She loved opera. She was known for her infectious laugh and broad smile; for her quick wit and keen intelligence; and for her genuine humility and complete candor. Mostly, though, Monica was known for her kindness. She is survived by her children, Rosemarie Thompson, a Department of Education guidance counselor and the Citywide Chapter Leader for guidance counselors for the United Federation of Teachers, and Daniah Thompson Beleford, MD, PhD, a clinical geneticist and research scientist at University of California, San Francisco. She is also survived by her siblings Phyllis Spaulding, Boris “Keeble” Tulloch, and Marcia Phillips; her extended step-family; her son-in-law John Thomas Beleford, III; and her grandchildren, John Thomas Beleford, IV, 13 years old, and Laila Monica Beleford, 7 years old.
